Flying Out of Terminal 1 Sept. 22 or 23? Here's What You Need to Know

On Tuesday, September 23, the existing Terminal 1 will be closed, and the New Terminal 1 will be open. But some flights will utilize the new Terminal 1 on the evening of September 22.

Here’s what passengers flying on Monday, September 22 need to know:

DEPARTURES: All flights will depart from the existing Terminal 1. The New Terminal 1 will not have any departing flights scheduled.

ARRIVALS: Evening flights, beginning at 8:55 p.m., will arrive at the New Terminal 1. All earlier flights will arrive at the existing Terminal 1.

The New T1 will include a new, on-airport, entrance road, giving travelers a quicker route to the airport by bypassing local traffic on N. Harbor Drive. New bicycle lanes and a pedestrian path will connect the airport to San Diego’s surrounding communities and we’re reserving space for a future public transit connection to the airport.

New Features

To give you the seamless and enjoyable travel experience you deserve, the New T1 will offer plenty of options for shopping and dining, as well as more gate-area seating. The new TSA checkpoint will be streamlined to make getting through security as stress-free as possible and we’ll make moving between the terminals easy, giving you the freedom to experience everything SAN has to offer.

Enriching Art

Five public artists have been commissioned to design spaces in the outdoor plazas, ticketing lobby, and a family play area among others.

Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at SAN. The New T1 construction and design will reflect our industry-leading commitment to sustainability through energy and water conservation, as well as clean-air and zero-waste initiatives. Our goal is to achieve LEED Gold certification.

Great things are on the way.

When Terminal 1 opened in 1967, it served 2.5 million passengers in its first year. In 2019, the same facility served approximately 11 million passengers. Today, SAN is the busiest single-runway commercial airport in the nation. For about half of our passengers, Terminal 1 provides their first — and sometimes last — impression of San Diego. We want it to be a great one.

Our current Terminal 1 was built for a 1967 San Diego, a time and place with fewer people, planes, and passports (but just as much sunshine, surf, and sea). In the past three years, we’ve held more than 100 community meetings and listened closely to what you wanted from a New T1. The result? A state-of-the-art terminal inspired by the people and places we love about San Diego.
